Coastal Erosion

As far as coastal hazards go Australia only faces a single major problem. That issue is coastal erosion. Coastal erosion is due to a high volume of repeated wave action hitting land. As this process occurs the coastal line degrades and slowly begins to fall apart. Coastal erosion causes damage and can completely destroy human infrastructure. Because of this, this is more of an economic issue than a physical safety one. Though this hazard can and has displaced hundreds of people from their homes for the fear of the land eroding from under them. The erosion usually takes place on beaches and dunes, land that isn't dense and compacted. Unfortunately 50% of  Australia's coastline is made up either sand or dunes. These sediments can easily be displaced and washed away giving way to erosion. Not much can be done about a process so natural and that's always occurring. Though some use of seawalls are made to prevent erosion, little is done to prevent it. The government agency Geo- Science Australia does collect data and conducts research about coastal erosion. They give the data to the government and other public agency's that will make use of it. They support programs that helps protect and restore the coastline as well as research and implement new methods of preparedness for coastal erosion.

  1. great research! My country also has had the problem with coastal erosion because of the
Nazca plate. Most of it comes from when there are tsunamis. Argentina has had tropical cyclones which cause it to have coastal erosion. Can't wait to learn more about your country.
